Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Humanities and Creativity in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Managing Editor leads the production of the new literary magazine, The Ampersand Review of Writing & Publishing. Founded in Fall 2020, The Ampersand Review is a literary magazine published by the Honours Bachelor of Creative Writing & Publishing Program at Sheridan College. In our pages we seek to provide a venue for excellent, innovative writing from across the country, representing literary voices from a vibrant spectrum of identities, intersections, backgrounds, creativities, and lived experiences. Because the "Ampersand" in our name signifies the essential relationship between writing and publishing, we also seek to encourage and promote—through book reviews and other features—a vital and inclusive domestic publishing industry that will allow Canada's remarkable variety of talented writers to thrive.

What You’ll be Doing

The Managing Editor oversees the operations, production, sales, circulation, and growth of the print publication and online platform of The Ampersand Review. Working with a diverse team that will include the school administration and a faculty-based Editorial Board, the incumbent will provide project management for the magazine, including setting and meeting production schedules and deadlines and establishing best practices for workflows. The Managing Editor will hire freelance designers and copyeditors and will hire, manage, and mentor student interns from the Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing & Publishing. In addition to developing and maintaining a detailed budget of planned annual expenditures, the incumbent will also be expected to develop a business plan for the long-term financial sustainability of the publication.  They will also seek out opportunities to better establish the magazine in the Canadian literary landscape, through promotions, festival attendance, merchandising, inter-journal exchanges, etc. 

The Ampersand Review is a professional, public-facing publication that is supported by a post-secondary institution. As a result, the Managing Editor will need to understand and adhere to both industry standards and Sheridan policies and procedures. 

About You

The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in English or French, Publishing, Creative Writing, or related field; or unrelated undergraduate degree plus graduate certificate/diploma in publishing or related field along with five years of experience. (Equivalency will be considered)
  • Minimum three years progressive experience in publishing, with an emphasis on production management and budgeting.
  • Thorough knowledge of editorial procedures and processes in both print and digital publishing. 
  • Solid organizational, managerial, and leadership skills, including leading a team, coaching, and goal setting.
  • Skilled in collaboration and relationship-building.
  • Computer and web literacy, with experience in a variety of programs, including proficiency in Microsoft Office especially Excel) and social media.
